The Business Department at Central offers students the chance to take classes that will enhance the types of skills that will be needed both in the classroom and on the job.

The Department is divided into three sections: Offering Computer Instruction, Financial Record Keeping for Business and Personal Use, and Retail Store Operations. Classes include a variety of computer courses at different levels of competency, accounting, business and consumer law, financial management, introduction to business and applied marketing where students produce the school's yearbook and manage the school store.

All students are required to demonstrate competency in computers and beginning with the Class of 2005 earn credit in at least two (2) computer classes. Currently students are enrolled directly in their first computer class. They then have options for their second computer class. These options include: Technology Two, Digital Design & Publications, Web Page Design, Digital Video Editing and more.

All of the above courses are designed to give students practical skills and background knowledge in computer usage as defined by today’s modern work environment. The Computer/Business Department operates three labs of computers plus students have the opportunity to work in the school store.

Each department at Central has a variety of class offers a variety of classes that will satisfy the needs and curiosities of a wide range of students. Few departments offer a variety of classes like the English Department.

Every student will take 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade English classes for two trimesters each year. While 9th, 10th, and 11th are standard courses, Central High School offers a variety of additional English classes for the student who loves English or wishes to explore the ELA content. Students may take Creative Writing, Expository Writing, Journalism, and Yearbook to supplement traditional English classes.

Seniors are able to select the English classes that best suit their needs (two trimesters of 12th grade English are required). Central High School offers World Literature, Adolescent Literature, New Voices, and Contemporary Literature & Film Studies.

In addition to the aforementioned classes, Central High School offers advanced English classes for the student who would like an extra challenge. English 9 Honors and 10 Honors are two trimester classes with increased rigor; the Honors classes then turn into English 11AP (AP Language) and 12AP (AP Literature) which are full year classes. Students in 11AP and 12AP are then encouraged to take the respective AP Exams.

As much fun as required English classes are, Central High School offers many out-of-class activities to round out the high school experience. Some of these include play performances, poetry readings, and the CREST Literary Magazine.

The Family and Consumer Sciences Department consists of 3 class offerings: Beginning Foods 1, Advanced Foods 2, and Interior Design. Students will learn basic cooking and nutrition in the beginning foods class while heading toward more in-depth cooking recipes in advanced foods. Interior Design covers the concepts of personal aesthetics, design principle and elements, color theory, floor planning, and basic architectural drawing.

A different form of expression is available in the Industrial Technology Education Department. While many students think of department as meaning just “shop” classes, there is a tremendous amount of “TECHNOLOGY” taught in each class.

PLTW (Project Lead the Way) is about applying STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) to solve complex, open-ended problems in a real-world context. Students focus on the process of defining and solving a problem, not on getting the "right" answer. They learn how to apply STEM knowledge, skills, and habits of mind to make the world a better place through innovation.

At Central, you can join a network of PLTW students that have said PLTW Engineering influenced their post-secondary decisions and helped shape their future. Even students who do not plan to pursue engineering after high school, the PLTW Engineering program provides opportunities to develop highly transferable skills in collaboration, communication and critical thinking which are relevant for any coursework or career.

While most classes at Central are geared toward the development of the mind, the Lifelong Wellness Department takes that function one step further and also works on developing the body in a series of co-educational classes. Freshmen generally spend the first year of high school fulfilling the MME Physical Education & Health Education requirements.

In addition, upperclassmen may take Advanced Fitness, Modern Fitness and Lifelong sports classes that are geared toward personal programs, learning skills, strategies of team play, and sportsmanship that will lead to students choosing life long healthy habits.

The goal is to positively affect students physically, intellectually, mentally, socially, and emotionally.

Our four year math program offers students a chance to build critical thinking, logic, and problem solving skills while working to meet the requirements of the Michigan Merit Curriculum.

At Central, students have the chance to study a variety of courses including Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus. These courses provide students the opportunity to develop skills and work ethic needed in all career paths.

The math department staff is dedicated to helping our students learn the mathematics that will make them successful after graduation. Teachers use a variety of instructional techniques to meet different learning styles with intervention available for those requiring additional academic support.

Science courses at Central are designed to provide students with a well-rounded background in both Biological and Physical Science. Courses help students understand the concepts necessary to be informed citizens and consumers and prepare them for further study after high school.

The graduation requirements are Biology, Chemistry or Physics and a third year of science.

Biological science offerings include AP Biology, Biology, Environmental Biology, Human Anatomy and Physiology.

Physical science offerings include AP Chemistry, Chemistry, Physics, Oceanography & Meteorology, Geology & Astronomy.

Central's Social Studies Department instructs all grade levels in areas such as geography, local, state, national and international history, sociology, psychology, economics, and government.

All students are required to take and pass some social studies courses, which have included American Government, History, Economics, Consumer Law or Money Class, and social studies elective.

While learning about our scientific place in the universe, students also have the opportunity to find out about our social place in the spectrum.

The Special Education Department services all students who have been identified with a disability.
